EMPEROR KHAI DINH (1916-1925)
Emperor Khai Dinh (1916-1925) was born Nguyen Phuc Buu Dao, when he ascended the throne he took the royal name Nguyen Phuc Tuan, the eldest son of King Dong Khanh.
Reign: During the reign of King Khai Dinh, the Hue court had no conflicts with France. Everything was decided by the Court of the Resident. King Khai Dinh also became friends with the Resident of Central Vietnam Jean François Eugène Charles and entrusted his son Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy to the Resident and his wife.
On May 20, 1922, King Khai Dinh went to France to attend the Colonial Fair in Marseille. This was the first time a Nguyen Dynasty king had gone abroad. King Khai Dinh’s trip sparked many activities of patriotic Vietnamese people to protest against him.
Khai Dinh built many structures, the most famous of which is his tomb. The tomb of King Khai Dinh is very different from other tombs of the past and has become a topic of discussion for many people, both in general public opinion and in the architectural profession. Many people criticize the tomb of King Khai Dinh for its hybrid architecture, but others say it is unique and different.
After 10 years on the throne, King Khai Dinh became seriously ill and died on September 20, At Suu year, or November 6, 1925, at the age of 41.
