Famous General and Founding Hero Nguyen Van Thanh (1758-1817)
In his youth, he followed his father, Nguyen Van Hien, to fight against the Tay Son army from the end of the Nguyen Lords’ reign in the late 18th century. During the reign of Nguyen Phuc Anh (later King Gia Long), he raised an army against the Tay Son army. He was a great general, a strategist, a politician, and a lawyer. With his heroic achievements, he made his name in the history of Vietnam in the early 19th century. He contributed to bringing Nguyen Phuc Anh to the throne, the first king of the Nguyen Dynasty (King Gia Long).
After the war, he continuously made great achievements for King Gia Long, who had a difficult time when he was newly established and ascended the throne. A typical example of his many great achievements was the stabilization of Tran Bac Ha (Northern Vietnam today) in the post-war period, which was chaotic with a complex society, remnants of factions, self-proclaimed separatists, and rampant robberies.
